Bikes Are Fast – 10
In the coming posts, starting with this one, I’ll be covering top 10 fastest bikes in the world as of 2015. This list is non-comprehensive. For most bikes, the stated speed limit hasn’t been reached but their specs validate the claims. Having said that, let’s get down to business.
10. Also called “Ten-nine-eight”, the Ducati 1098 is an Italian sports bike (from Ducati, of course), that was in production from 2007 to 2009. It comes in black, red and yellow and in three versions 1098, 1098S and 1098R.
Weighing about 173 kg, the Ten-nine-eight has an average engine displacement of 1198 cc, 90 deg. V-twin cyclinder, 4 valve per cylinder Desmodromic (learn how a desmodromic valve works here), liquid cooled. This yields a power range of 160-180 hp. For transmission, the bike has a 6 speed gearbox and a dry multiplate clutch with hydraulic control. On to the brakes; the rear wheel is stopped by a 245mm disc, 2-piston caliper while the front has 2 x 330 mm semi-floating discs, 4-piston. Here are more and official specs.
This beauty hits 0 – 100 kph in less than 3.0s with an estimated top speed of 290 kph, ranking at number 10 on my list (get the feeling). Ten-nine-eight would go for Kes. 1.2 million. It’s worth it, perhaps, as it claims to give the highest torque-to-weight ratio any production superbike has ever made!
